OUR STAFF

The UCUC Preschool Director has a BS degree in Child Development. All of the Staff members are professionals with sound education in Child Development and are CPR & First Aid qualified. They remain current in all areas of child development by attending workshops and conferences, as well as maintaining membership in NAEYC and SDAEYC. (mouse over staff photos to enlarge)

Paula Ries

Director

My commitment to every family is to work with you and your child’s individual teachers to ensure that your child’s individual needs are being met. Only by working together can we provide your child with the best care and educational opportunities. Thank you for entrusting your child’s care to us.

Education:
B.S. in Child Development from the University of Wisconsin
28 units in Master’s ECE program from San Francisco State University
36 units at professional/post graduate level in administration, counseling and ECE from various universities and university extensions

Experience:
Over 35 years in the ECE field.
Started working at UCUC Preschool in 1988

Interests/Hobbies/Enjoys:
Volunteer at La Jolla Playhouse, enjoy gardening, hiking, reading and spending time with family and friends


Tracy Martin

Assistant Director

I am deeply committed to my work with young children and their families. As early childhood educators our job is to understand who the child is, how they relate to the world and what they need to support their own learning and discovery. I am excited to be a part of your child’s learning journey and look forward to meeting all of the families at UCUC.

Education:
B.A. in Early Childhood Education with an emphasis on Preschool Administration at National University.

Master Teacher Permit issued from the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Experience:
Over 20 years’ experience working in the field of early childhood education. Previous lead teaching experience with 2’s, 3’s and 4 year olds.

Hobbies/Interest/Enjoys:
I am a mother to three young adult children. Two who just married and one who will be a college freshman. My husband and I enjoy triathlons, hiking and exploring the great outdoors. Although recent empty nesters we still parent our two dogs, two rabbits, parrot and fish. For relaxation I enjoy watching HGTV.

Marilyn Kennedy

Class: 2-Day Older

Education:
Marilyn has been teaching preschool since 1992 and joined UCUC Preschool  2003. She obtained her B.A. in Social Science from SDSU.
 
Certification:
Site Supervisor and Master Teacher Permits issued from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
 
Experience:
Mrs. Marilyn finds teaching gratifying work and enjoys helping students build their self-esteem while they learn through play, creative activities and interactions with others.  She is thankful for the opportunity to watch as students learn and grow.
 
Interest:
Mrs. Marilyn enjoys travel, cooking, exercise and volunteer work. She is married and has 2 adult sons and 1 grandchild..


Margaret Miller

Class: 3-Day Older and 2-Day Older

Education:
B.A. in English from All Saints’ College in Kerala, India M. A. in English & Literature from University of Kerala

Experience:
Taught English in India for 5 years at St. Joseph’s College
Worked at UCUC Preschool since 1990

Interests/Hobbies/Enjoys:
Team sports, cooking, reading, gardening, languages and linguistics


Randee Lynch

Class: 5-Day Older

Education:
Associates in Science Degree in Child Development from Mesa College.
 
Certificate:
Teacher Permit from the CA. Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
 
Experience:
Started teaching at UCUC Preschool in 2004 and has been working in the field of Early Childhood since 2002.
 
Interest/ Hobbies/ Enjoys:
Randee loves many outdoor activities; kayaking, fishing, riding, hiking, walking on the beach, swimming, gardening and dancing.
She enjoys animals and loves spending time with her family.


Kathy Brightman

Class: 3-Day Older

Education:
Majored in Liberal Studied with an emphasis on education for 3 years at Point Loma Nazarene University.
Has obtained 35 Early Childhood Education Units.
 
Experience.
Started teaching at UCUC Preschool in 1998. She enjoys teaching young children.
 
Interest/ Hobbies/ Enjoys
Kathy has been married for 27 years and has 3 beautiful daughters. Her oldest daughter lives in the Canary Island of Spain, her middle daughter graduated from UC Davis and her youngest daughter attends High Tech High School. Kathy loves traveling to Spain to visit her daughter. She also enjoys spending time with her family here in San Diego or just simply relaxing.


Carol Frasier

Class: 3-Day Older

Education:
A.A. in Child Development from Mesa College
B.A. in Elementary Education with emphasis on Special Education
Has earned additional units in Early Childhood Education from various universities and extensions as well as Montessori Training Centers

Experience:
Over 30 years in the Early Childhood Development field
Has worked at UCUC Preschool since 1992

Interests/Hobbies/Enjoys:
Traveling, reading, swimming and scrap booking


Carolyn Nelson

Class: 2-Day Older

Education:
Has an Associate Science Degree in Child Development from San Diego Mesa College.

Experience:
Thirteen years working in preschools as a teacher and an aide.
Started working at UCUC Preschool in 2011.

Interests/Hobbies/Enjoys:
Horseback riding, camping, hiking and outdoor activities.


Allison Hyde

Class:  3-Day Younger & 2 Day Younger

Education:
Working towards a B.A. degree in Child Development.
 
Experience:
Started working at UCUC Preschool in 2015.
 
Interest/ Hobbies/ Enjoys
 
I enjoy being silly and fun. I care about each child’s well-being and I am dedicated to making preschool a safe learning environment. I love old movies, cooking and spending time with my family.


Janina Tauanuu

Class: 2-Day Younger & Outdoor Specialist/Floater
 
Education:
Associate of Arts in Transfer Studies at San Diego Mesa College.
Bachelors of Science in Child and Family Development at San Diego State University.
 
Experience:
Over 7 years of experience working in the field of early childhood education.
 
Interests/Hobbies/ Enjoys
I am excited to be on board as the new 2 Day Lead Teacher and Outdoor Specialist/Floater here at UCUC Preschool. My goal as a teacher is to provide the students with a fun and safe environment to grow and thrive in, while learning through "play" and exploration. I can't wait to meet your little ones and definitely looking forward to an awesome school year!
I love spending time with and exploring San Diego with my children.  I also enjoy reading, listening to music and going for walks.


Pam Gallo

Class: 3-Day Younger

Education:
B.A. in Theater from University of California at San Diego
17 Units in Early Childhood Education
 
Certification:
California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) Certification
Working towards Associate Teacher Permit from the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing
 
Experience:
18 years of experience working with preschool and elementary school age children.
3 years’ experience as a preschool program specialist at a STEAM based program.
 
Interest/ Hobbies/ Enjoys:
Music and Disneyland


Ginny Pearce

Tu/Th Floater Assistant Teacher

Ginny is the mother of two beautiful and energetic boys. She is a dedicated early childhood assistant teacher with passion for children’s learning and care. Ginny is very excited to be part of the UCUC Preschool family.
 
Education
B.B.A in Hotel and Tourism Management from Khon Kean University  in Thailand.
 
Early Childhood Credential from American Montessori Society (AMS)
 
Experience
One year working as a support teacher in a Montessori school.
Volunteer work at Torrey Pines Elementary- 2016-Present. Helping Kindergarten students with reading, dance, theater and music.
 
Interest/Hobbies/Enjoys
Ginny enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She likes traveling, hiking, camping and running.
